Why can’t they earn more money?
Most rural farmers have only small parcels of land. This enables them to grow just enough food to survive, and maybe a small cash crop, such as chillies, or coffee.
Life expectancy is so low that over half the population is under 15 years of age.
Many families are single parent. Most families include orphans, usually inherited from a relative. The single parent needs to be there for young children and tending the farm. Going “out to work” is not an option.
And the next generation is not set to fare any better. Most put their faith in education, this being the highest priority for cash spending in most families.
But with so few adults in the population, so few jobs and so many school leavers each year, what can they expect, but to take over the farm, and carry on subsisting?
They need help to break out of this poverty trap.
